Nothing is worse for an athlete than being told you may need (or should have) gone to the hospital
So last week, I had done a bicep and triceps workout with a cocky freshman who thought he knew everything about lifting and such. I just wanted to see what his kind of workouts were compared to mine.
*side note* I am a track athlete in the off season of training with muscle endurance workouts, so light weight and high repetitions
We start the workout with some bicep curls. I’m doing 20 pound weights, so it isn’t too bad. But then he gives me a 50 pound bar to do curls until exhaustion. I did around 20 and then put it down. He took it and did the same and told me I was going again soon. We did this five time.
This whole workout was bicep and triceps only. So as you can imagine, my arms were dead by the end of it.
*another side note* I had a workout earlier that morning cause I forgot about my afternoon session with this guy. I had taken a half scoop of pre workout before and then another half scoop for the second workout.
In the middle of the workout, I had to leave. I felt like I was losing control of my body and my anxiety started to build up. So I went to the bathroom, punched a wall twice and came back out. A friend heard it and asked what it was. I told her it was me and that I was better. I lost control and that was the only thing I could do to regain it.
Anyway, after the workout I was drained, but felt slightly better because I finished it with him.
The next day….
The day after the workout, and the rest of the week (not an exaggeration) I could not fully extend or fully bend either of my arms and they were both quite swollen. I was in severe amount of pain. Not sore. PAIN.
Yesterday I finally felt better and went to the gym with my best friend to only come to feel the sharpest pain in my shoulder and triceps on my right side. Oh great… So I go to the trainers and explain everything that happened and guess what?
I SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER THAT WORKOUT.
You see, the thing is when you go until exhaustion and then do it again, it doesn’t build up muscle, but deteriorate it and it goes into the blood stream which goes to your kidneys.
I try and tell this kid what happened but no, he has a closed mind about it. He thinks that because he is all big and bad that he can do that without any problems. He compared it to falling and cracking his head in half.
The difference is that workouts are a science.
I have been learning about this process for three years now and well I’m all about learning new workout routines and such, you have to be smart and know your own body, plus, do something smart for your body…. Not stupid.
So after talking to this kid, I am shaken, upset, angry, and all I want to do is punch a wall, but instead I am making tally marks on my wrist. Each one for each time I want to self harm or do something stupid.
Be smart when it comes to your body. Know yourself cause no one else will.
I was able to do a clapping push up!
Baby steps will get you far in the long run and this just proved it!!!
